Do You Want That Job?

Excellent advice! Evaluation is often overlooked at the start of a job search. I would add that before writing your resume, scheduling interviews, or anything else, create a list of criteria for assessing interviews and job offers. Ask yourself, “How will I evaluate an interview or potential offer?” Use that list to develop your questions and gather the information needed to make an informed decision. Don’t let the company “sell you” into a job you might not want. John Karras, President, Job Transitions, Inc.

Would you still want that job if it regularly meant working through dinner?

Maybe people keep telling you to go for it. Maybe you’ve wanted the title for years, or the work excites you.

The extra income could help you pay down debt, build your savings, or finally take a vacation.

How often would you be traveling or answering messages on weekends?

Ask the hiring manager or someone currently in that role:

“Can you walk me through a recent full working week in this role, including work outside normal hours? Was that a typical week?”

Write down your answers to these seven prompts. What have you confirmed about the job? What are you still assuming?

Evidence > Assumption.
