Job Search Strategies - Networking Versus Job Boards: By John Karras, Job Transitions, Inc.

Based on my experience, the biggest misconception in a job search is that “people never get a job by responding to posted job leads.”  Throughout my career, I have worked with hundreds of clients and higher education students seeking a new opportunity.  I would estimate that about 80% of them got at least one of their jobs by responding to a posted lead.

Is networking the best way?  Yes.  However, there are advantages and disadvantages to each method.

1)     Networking.  The best way, but it takes time to develop your networking contacts to the point where they’re willing to help you with the actual job search.  They’re good for informational interviewing which is a plus, but actually referring you to specific leads is another matter altogether.  They might refer you to another contact who they think can help you – Great! However, all of this takes time.  Sometimes, a lot of time. It is definitely the best way if you’re looking to transition your career and you don’t have much experience in the positions you are targeting.

This is why it's a good idea to always maintain good communication with your networking contacts even when you’re not searching for a job.  Just like updating your resume, you should update and nurture your networking contacts frequently.

Summary – The best way, but can be very time consuming.  It could take three to four weeks or even longer for the networking process to produce actual job interviews.

2)     Job Boards. Will many job seekers respond to a posted lead?  Probably yes for most posted leads, but does that mean you should not respond especially if you have most of the job experience they are looking for and have a high degree of interest in the job?  My response to that question is no.  You should respond.  I know there are exceptions, but in most cases the posted lead is open now!  It does cost the company money to post them. I have worked with many job seekers who report receiving an invitation for an interview within one or two days of responding to a posted job lead.

Summary – Many job seekers will probably respond, but can lead to quality interviews within a few days of responding.  It is the fastest way to generate quality interviews.

In conclusion, you should divide your time management in the job search between the two methods.  Spend 50% nurturing your networking contacts and 50% searching for and responding to posted leads.  Even LinkedIn has a very good job board you should be using.  In my opinion, this will produce the greatest number of quality interviews that meet your needs within a reasonable period of time.
