When Should You Negotiate Salary

In my opinion, the best time to negotiate a job offer is after you receive an initial offer, not during the interview process. If you try to negotiate during the interview, you are negotiating from a weak position. You do not even know they want you for the job yet. Three things change, all to the candidate’s advantage if you negotiate after the initial job offer is made.
1) Now you know they want you for the job. After all the resume reviews and interviews, they picked you. Didn’t know that before.
2) Now you have a starting point to negotiate. Didn’t know that before.
3) Now you are the decision-maker on them. Before the job offer is made, they are making a judgement on you.
Each of these shifts in dynamics enhances your position in the negotiation. If you intend to negotiate, do so from a position of strength.
