Is it ever a good idea returning to a former company during a job search?

According to statistics in a survey conducted by Monster, a surprising number of people (at least to me) would consider returning to a previous employer. This article provides valuable information you should consider before making that decision. I think some of the rational presented in the article is also valuable information if you are considering taking a counter offer from your current company once you have secured an offer from another company. Is the reason really money? If you did not like going to work at your current company, is a little more money really going to make a difference? Is that really why you left in the first place or considering an offer from a new employer? Accepting a counter offer can be risky for a variety of reasons.
