When to Follow-Up on a Job Offer

This is one of the most common questions I get when working with clients that have completed the interview process, but have not heard back from the company after an extended period of time. The author provides some very good advice on how to handle this situation.
Be “Aggressive, but Reasonable” is the term I like to use. This is why one of the questions a candidate MUST ask during the interview is “I’m very interested in this position. What is the next step and when do you think that will take place?” If the company representative gives you a specific time frame (such as one week) except for thank you notes, which should always be sent, you are done with this company until that time frame comes and goes.
Once the time frame is not met, a follow-up phone call or email (phone call is better) should be made. A good way to frame that follow-up call is “I am still interested in the position, and I am calling to see if I am STILL UNDER CONSIDERATION?” The company only has three possible responses:
1) No, you are not. At least you do not have to carry any false hope
2) We don’t know yet. Try to get another time frame for the decision – then back to Reasonable but Aggressive
3) Yes, you are still under consideration. They might explain the hold up and even schedule another interview during that call. They might state that the offer is being created and so forth. This type of response is more common than you might think
4) If the company does not communicate a specific time frame for the decision, I would suggest 3 to 4 days as being defined as “Reasonable, but Aggressive.”
